UMG CDL Mapping Tool

Role: Lead UX Designer | Team: Esther, Amanda, Gabriella, Rachel, Sydnie, Troy | Duration: 8 weeks

Project Overview

CDL (Company Division Label) Mapping is a tool used globally by several different employees in various departments across UMG. The program is currently integrated in the Digital Global Scheduling System, known as DiGs.

Our initial goal was to gain a deeper understanding of the issues and pain points surrounding the C/D/L Mapping tool, and then apply those insights to create innovative designs to alleviate those frustrations.

My Role:
As the lead designer, I managed the entire process, leading the user research phase, developing design decisions, and overseeing the final designs as well. I collaborated with product owners and developers to present a final product that met the clients’ needs.

The Problems

As a design team, our main task was to redesign the C/D/L Mapping platform to manage the pain points addressed by high-level users, which we gathered through an initial round of interviews. During these interviews, we collected data regarding user frustrations, and conducted heuristic evaluations as well.

A recurring theme we noticed was the need for an interface that allows for more intuitive navigation and interactions with the platform.
Below are 6 main issues that were mentioned during the interviews:

Research Phase

During our user interviews, we collected lots of actionable insights that informed our design decisons. Following the interviews we organized our research into sentiment analysis and and consolidated notes to prepare for our design phase.

Our Design Solutions

Based on the pain points gathered from our user interviews, we came up with 6 design solutions to explore in our redesign process.

Design Features

Below are new features and designs we created to implement the changes mentioned above.

Page Organization + Navigation Bar

Currently, the tool holds all sections on one page– we reorganized the tool to have 4 separate tabs, easily accessible by a side nav bar.

Unmapped CDL Section

We made 3 main changes to the “Unmapped CDL” section in order to optimize user experience:

  1. Renamed section from “Create a Mapping” to “Unmapped C/D/L’s”.

  2. Allow for bulk mapping

  3. Addition of sorting options

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Existing Mappings

Allows users to view mappings that were already created, displaying the most recent ones first and offering an option to view history of edits.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Notification System

We created a notification dropdown to inform users of new mappings, mappings that need to be made, etc.

Final Prototype

We built out our final prototype on Figma and presented to stakeholders.

Key Takeaways

Currently, we are testing our prototype with our high-level users to gather insight on how we can further adjust our designs prior to entering the design phase.

A couple key takeaways from the project were as follows:

  • The presence of feedback is very important for users.

  • Clear and concise UX Writing is crucial for a positive user experience.

  • Minimal interfaces are key for data-focused platforms.
